Thomas Merton was a great inspiration to me.

Agreed! In this passage below he expresses his thoughts about the sad consequences of consumerism/ affluence for its own sake, and its detrimental effects on the natural world: “I think that the very thought processes of materialistic affluence … are ultimately self-defeating. They contain so many built-in frustrations that they inevitably lead us to despair in the midst of ‘plenty’ and ‘happiness’ and the awful fruit of this despair is indiscriminate, irresponsible destructiveness, hatred of life, carried on in the name of life itself. In order to ‘survive’ we instinctively destroy that on which our survival depends.”
(Makes me want to go and live on a small island somewhere remote!)

He did the next best thing: he entered the Trappists (or Cistercians, if you want the formal name). I spent part of a week at the abbey in Conyers, Georgia on retreat. It was a beautiful experience…
